WESLEY METHODIST CHURCH MASTIC POINT, ANDROS

Wesley Methodist Church, Mastic Point, Andros

In 1904 the establishment of a church to be known as the Methodist Church in Mastic Point came into being. The property was given by Mr. Abraham Rolle. In 1904 the foundation was laid after which construction ceased until 1907. Construction began again in 1907 and the Church was complete on 15th March 1914.

There were two Ministers present during the construction period. They were Rev. Wilfield and Rev. Pode who were from England. The Church members at that time were people like Alfred Colebrook Sr., John Eddon and Jacob Rolle who were local preachers and Ezekiel Bain. Ezekiel Bain was the first Local Preacher in Mastic Point, and the first Androsian to be elected to the House of Assembly. The second local preacher was John Eddon followed by Jacob Rolle and Sarah Colebrooke.

From the church’s inception until 1966 Ministers would only visit Mastic Point every quarter from Staniard Creek, Andros. During that period Roxy Russell kept the church’s doors open.

In 1966 Mastic Point was blessed with its first residential Minister by the name of Rev. Henley Perry. During the time that Rev. Perry was stationed in Mastic Point a lot of changes came into effect. The church first Manse was built. The church’s Headquarters moved from Staniard Creek into Mastic Point. The service time was changed from 11 a.m. to 9 a.m. A major renovation was done to the church; spearheaded by Mr. Rodger Munnings, who played a very important role in the development of the church. Along with other church members including Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Colebrooke. Electricity came into place as well as the church’s first vehicle was purchased.

The church was also serviced by Ministers from Britain, the Caribbean and the U.S.A.

Following the departure of Rev. Henley Perry the church’s responsibility was placed almost entirely on Brother Jonathan Rolle. He spearheaded many projects such as an extension to the church; which included a Youth Hall, a bathroom and a kitchen, and the fencing of the church. The construction was done by the Chairman of the building committee, Henson Pickstock.

Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Rolle could not be left out of the church’s history. They are a Mother and Father to all in the church. They kept the church’s doors open and the doors of their hearts and home to all Methodist Ministers and members for the past 50 years. Sister Kirklyn Rolle kept the Sunday school going and helped to keep the Church’s doors open.

On the 1st July, 1993 life was then given to the Church in Mastic Point. By an Act of Parliament the church was given its independence, and is now born into the Bahamian Methodist Church. Our Local Preacher Jonathan Rolle is now our first Lay Pastor. Back to top
